When people think about travel credit cards, they often jump straight to flexible points. But hotel cobranded credit cards can be some of the most powerful tools in your points-and-miles strategy — especially for families. In fact, if I had a kid in traveling competition sports, I would 100% hold each of these cards that come with an annual free night. There is truly not any reason not to, because surely I can not book a night in a hotel room for less than a $95 annual fee.
Why Hotel Cards?
Because hotel programs offer things flexible points can’t — free night certificates. Often these cards also have perks that you couldn’t get otherwise.
Below, I’m breaking down four major hotel programs — Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, and IHG — along with why each one shines, and what to watch for when applying for their credit cards.

Hilton cards are often one of the easiest entry points into hotel rewards — and incredibly useful for families.
1. No Resort Fees on Award Stays
When you book a Hilton property with points, Hilton does not pass along resort fees. This can easily save $50+ per night at resort properties.
2. Fifth Night Free on Award Stays
Anyone with Hilton elite status (which comes automatically with most Hilton credit cards) gets the 5th night free on standard award bookings. This is huge for longer trips.
3. Flexible Room Options for Families
Hilton allows:
4. Bonus: Uncapped Free Night Certificate
If you’re able to snag a free night certificate, these certificates are uncapped- meaning you can use them at basically any property with standard award availability! Read more about the Hilton Free Night Certificates.

Hyatt is the darling of the points world — and for good reason. While it has a smaller footprint, the value is consistently excellent.
1. Fixed Award Pricing
Hyatt uses an award chart, meaning prices are predictable:
2. Strong Loyalty Perks
Hyatt elite benefits actually matter:
3. No Resort Fees/Taxes on Award Stays
Hyatt does not add resort or destination fees to award bookings, which keeps redemptions clean and predictable.

IHG doesn’t always get the same love as Hyatt or Hilton — but it can be excellent for families and longer stays.
1. Fourth Night Free on Award Stays
IHG credit cardholders get the actual 4th night free when booking entirely with points — a powerful perk for vacation stays if your 4th night lands on an expensive weekend night!
2. Great Family-Friendly Properties
IHG shines with:
👉 Pro Tip: While the above-mentioned brands might not be the most glamorous, they pack a punch for families. If you’re looking for glamorous (and often kid friendly too!) check out IHG’s Kimpton brand!
3. Frequent Transfer Bonuses & Big Welcome Offers
IHG often runs:
👉 Pro Tip: Keep in mind that IHG rarely offers their best ever 175K welcome offers on referral links. So don’t count on the fact that you’ll be able to refer a spouse or friend and earn referral points on top of the high welcome offer!

Marriott has the largest footprint globally, which makes it incredibly useful — even if the program itself is more complex. I grew up in a Marriott loving family and I’ve had my Marriott card longer than almost every other card!
1. Massive Global Footprint
With 30+ brands worldwide, Marriott often has something where you’re traveling — from budget-friendly options to luxury resorts.
2. Free Night Certificates Can Be Stacked
Marriott free night certificates can:
This makes them very useful!
3. Fifth Night Free on Award Stays
Like Hilton, Marriott offers a 5th night free on award bookings — a big win for family trips.
Check out some of the great places to use those elevated 50K Free Night Certificate offers when they come around!
Wyndham often flies under the radar compared to the major hotel heavyweights, but that’s exactly why it can be a hidden gem — especially if you value simple redemption rules, family-friendly properties, and big point redemptions for longer stays.
1. Simple, Broad Award Chart
Wyndham uses a simple award structure (often a flat rate for many properties) instead of a complicated category chart. This makes it easy to estimate the value of your points and plan your stays without surprises.
2. Family-Friendly Properties & Timeshare Options
Many Wyndham properties — especially those in the Club Wyndham and WorldMark portfolios — offer:
• Spacious multi-bedroom villas
• Full kitchens and laundry
• Resort-style amenities
These are especially great for families who want space and comfort without burning tons of cash or points.
3. Valuable Redemptions at Lesser-Known Properties
Some Wyndham hotels and resorts that often get overlooked still offer excellent cents-per-point value, like:
• All inclusive options in Mexico and the Caribbean
• Family-friendly beaches
• Mountain and National Park destinations

Before applying, it’s important to understand some tips and tricks regarding the cobranded hotel credit cards.
You might roll your eyes when I say this. But here goes. There’s no “best” hotel credit card — only the one that fits your travel style. And sometimes it changes. As you progress in the points game, it’s nice to have options in multiple hotel chains -as long as it fits in your travel style!
Hotel credit cards aren’t just about free nights — they’re about making travel easier, more comfortable, and more affordable, especially for families. Since we travel more than 3 nights per year – I find great value in holding each of the Hyatt, Marriott, and IHG cards because I KNOW that I’ll be ale to use the free night certificates each year, no problem.
If you want help deciding which hotel card fits your travel goals best, that’s exactly what I help with here at Amber on Points!
