If you have a family of five or more, you know “The Struggle.” You search for a hotel on points, put in “2 Adults, 3 Kids,” and suddenly everything is either “Sold Out” or requires two separate rooms. Don’t worry, I’ve been there too.
But here’s the good news: Marriott actually has a massive footprint of properties designed specifically for us. Whether you’re heading to the Mouse or the Beach, you don’t have to settle for a cramped room or a massive bill. Why I have not done this sooner, I don’t know. But here we are. Let’s dive in.
Be sure to check out our Marriott Deep Dive to learn all the details on the Marriott Bonvoy rewards program.
Before we look at specific locations, remember these three brands. They are the bread and butter for large families because they standardize larger layouts. And remember the free breakfast? That’s always a win with large families. My teens eat a ton.
Marriott Vacation Clubs are obivously the best choice for a large family, right? Well not exactly if you’re traveling on points. Historically MVC’s are harder to find points availability at. If you happen to, then I’d go for it! But I’m not going to spend a lot of time talking about MVC’s becuase, well, we’re just looking for standard rooms to use our points on!
Clearwater Beach Marriott Resort on Sand Key

An all suite hotel in the heart of Clearwater Beach. This is what family spring break dreams are made of!
Residence Inn By Marriott Pigeon Forge

Free breakfast and a kitchenette? TownPlace Suites Pigeon Forge checks all the boxes. All within close proximity to a National Park, theme parks and family fun.
Element Anaheim Resort Convention Center

Free breakfast and walking distance to Disneyland make this a great option for families looking to visit the Mouse. Standard rooms are designed with “smart space” layouts that feel much larger than a typical hotel room.
Residence Inn By Marriott Maui Wailea

This Wailea hotel consistently gets great reviews. Among the standard amenities, there’s also a free shuttle to local area sites/shopping. While they do charge for parking, this is one of the few chain hotels on Maui that does not charge resort fees.
Residence Inn by Marriott Chicago Downtown/Loop

A hotel in the heart of the city that accommodates large families! This property is in the heart of downtown Chicago, close to major attractions.
Now that you’ve seen the rooms, you’re probably thinking: “Okay, but how do I get enough points to actually book these?!” Standard rooms for 5+ guests often cost a bit more than a tiny room with a single king bed, so having a strategy to top off your Bonvoy account is key. Here are my favorite ways to rack up those points:
Marriott is unique because they have cards from both Chase and American Express.
💡Pro tip: Always double check eligibility for welcome bonuses based off of if you hold or have held a Marriott cobranded card in the past. Because two banks issue these cards, there are a lot of stipulations on eligibility requirements.
I don’t typically transfer points to Marriott from flexible currency card (not to say you can’t!). I typically like to earn the bulk of my points and/or certificates from Marriott cards and use these flexible currency cards to top off award stays if needed.
💡Pro Tip: Free Night Award Certificates can be topped off with up to 25,000 Marriott points per night.
Don’t forget this secret weapon of Marriott points: When you book four nights on points, the fifth (lowest price) night is free. For a large family this is huge. This is like a 20% savings on your stay right from the start.
Traveling with a larger crew doesn’t have to mean booking two rooms or “making it work” on a cramped pull-out sofa (we’ve done that….we don’t like it). By targeting these specific “sweet spot” properties and having a solid point-earning strategy in your wallet, you can enjoy your vacation with your kids (and maybe even a little bit of privacy, too!).
