What’s Changing on June 15, 2026

New Earning Categories

This is the part I’m most excited about. The Sapphire Preferred® is adding two brand new bonus categories:

  • 3x points on gas purchases and electric vehicle charging including Costco gas stations (yes, they confirmed it.)
  • 3x points on vacation home rentals — including eligible purchases through Airbnb and VRBO.

This is a big deal for us large families who book Airbnb’s and wish we could earn more than 1x on our purchases!

New Credits

  • $100 Chase Travel Hotel Credit: up from $50. That’s double what it was before, and it applies to hotel stays booked through Chase Travel. If you already used your $50 credit this benefit period, Chase will give you an additional $50 to bring you up to the full $100. $100 seems more reasonable since most hotels cost over $100 per night.
  • $120 TSA PreCheck Credit: brand new. If you haven’t enrolled in TSA PreCheck yet, the Sapphire Preferred now covers it. To be honest, I can’t believe this card didn’t cover it previously. But alas, it’s does now. Check out this blog post to learn more about how to get Global Entry, TSA PreCheck and Clear.

New Benefits

  • Complimentary Apple TV+ subscription for 1 year: a fun addition. It’s not going to make or break your decision but free is free.
  • Enhanced travel protections including Emergency Evacuation and Transportation Coverage: this one is actually significant if you travel internationally. Emergency evacuation coverage is expensive to purchase separately and having it built into the card is valuable peace of mind, especially for families traveling abroad.

These benefits make this feel a bit like the Chase Sapphire Reserve®. It’ feels more like the little brother to the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and I’m okay with that. The Apple TV subscription is a nice perk and I’ll gladly take any enhanced travel protections. Emergency Evacuation and Transportation coverage is harder to come by so it’s a pleasant surprise on this card.

The Hyatt Transfer Change: It’s Time To Talk About It

Okay, I get it. I know this is the one everyone is going to focus on, so here goes.

Hyatt points will now transfer from Chase Ultimate Rewards at a 4:3 ratio instead of the previous 1:1 ratio. What that means is that for every 4 Chase UR points you transfer, you’ll receive 3 Hyatt points. Think of it like this: 75,000 Ultimate Rewards will now be 56,250 Hyatt points. I do have a bit of good news for you….keep reading, we’ll get there.

Is this a bummer? Yes, definitely. The 1:1 Hyatt transfer was one of the crown jewels of the Chase ecosystem and a lot of us have built our hotel strategies around it. It’s for sure been one of our staples. My family has a lot of memories made at Hyatt properties where I transferred Chase Ultimate Rewards to book the stay.

Oh before I forget. Scroll to the bottom of this article to use our transfer bonus calculator to help figure out how many points you need!

But here’s the perspective I want to offer:

We are traveling for nearly free on points. The hotels we’re booking with Hyatt points — the Hyatt Regency Maui, Park Hyatt Chicago, the Grand Hyatt Kauai — these are properties that cost $500, $800, $1,000+ per night in cash. Even at a 4:3 ratio, we’re still getting extraordinary value from these points.

What this change means practically (for my family, anyway) is that transferring to Hyatt may not always be the most obvious first choice depending on what you’re booking. You’ll want to do the math. For high-category properties where Hyatt is still the best redemption, you may just need a few more points. For lower-category properties, it might be worth comparing other options like booking within the Chase Travel or booking direct with cash.

But the bottom line? Chase Ultimate Rewards are still a great flexible points currency. Hyatt is still an incredible program. The landscape just shifted slightly and we adapt. We always do.

Alright, a few more things to touch on….

What’s Staying the Same

Okay, remember that good news I was talking about? The Chase Sapphire Reserve® points transfer program is not changing at this time. All of the Chase transfer partners remain at 1:1, including Hyatt when transferring from the Sapphire Reserve.

If you’re heavy into Hyatt stays or perhaps just need a nudge to get the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, this might be the deciding factor. Check out this blog post about the Chase Sapphire Reserve®.

When Do Existing Cardholders Get the New Benefits?

Existing Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card cardmembers will have access to all of the new benefits beginning June 15, 2026 — day one of the launch. You don’t need to do anything or reapply.

My Take

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card seems better for everyday spending and travel. The Airbnb/VRBO 3x category alone is a game changer for families who travel with kids and prefer the space and value of a vacation rental. The doubled hotel credit, and enhanced travel protections add actual value that I can value.

Even the TSA PreCheck credit is nice. I know it’s on a LOT of cards, but feel like it should be on this card. This is one of the first cards (if not the first) people get. It’s nice to have the TSA PreCheck credit there as a perk when people are starting this fun hobby.

The Hyatt transfer change stings a little. Okay a lot. I’m reconsidering the need to have a Sapphire Reserve® at all times. But honestly, our travel has been shifting toward needing more space (I guess the Airbnb 3x will come in handy now). That’s the beauty of this hobby. How we earn points may shift. But how we redeem points and what our travel needs are also shift.

At the end of the day, it doesn’t change the fundamental reason I recommend this card to nearly everyone starting their points journey. Chase Ultimate Rewards are still one of (if not the most) versatile points in the game and the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is still the best card to start with at $95/year.
