I know you typically hear me shout from the rooftops yelling, “Transfer your points! Transfer your points!” However, sometimes, that isn’t practical. And sometimes (only sometimes) it can be more beneficial to use your Miles to book an Airbnb.

There was a time when sharing a hotel room with my kids was the worst thing I could ever imagine! Now, well, it’s still pretty bad. Ha! With little kids, group travel, or a stay in Europe (where room capacity maxes out at 3), Airbnb’s are often the way to go! If this applies to you – you need to learn how to cover your Airbnb stay on Capital One Miles to give you a $0 Airbnb stay.

Here’s how to book your Airbnb with Capital One bonus miles and to reimburse yourself!

Step 1:

Earn the points. The cards I recommend most to earn Capital One Miles is the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card, or the Capital One Spark Cash Plus. Check out the bottom of this post to see the current offers!

Ok – so you’ve earned the points. Let’s show you how to spend them!

Step 2:

Book your Airbnb or other type of short term rental using your Venture Rewards Card or Venture X (compare these two cards here. It’s essential that you use the card to book your Airbnb. Anything that codes as “travel” when you use your card to book, you can ultimately use to refund yourself for your purchase. This could include flights, train tickets, rental cars, cruises, Disney tickets (IF purchases through a travel agent, otherwise they will code as “entertainment”), and more.

Step 3:

Log in to your Capital One account. Select “Travel” and then “Cover Travel Purchases.”

Step 4:

Find the Airbnb you booked and select it. You’ll see that to reimburse yourself for $134 you will need 13,466 miles. Select that option and complete!

I feel like it’s my duty to tell you that you can get better value from credit card points by transferring them to travel partners. However, I also think YOU determine what you value. If you value not hiding under your sheets with your phone at 8 PM in a shared hotel room with your kids – do an Airbnb.

Also, if you’re booking in Europe the maximum room capacity is often two. If you have a family of five, you will likely find an Airbnb that will cost you LESS points than a hotel room.
