Whether you’re traveling on points or paying the big bucks – there is something that we all have in common. When you reenter the US, you’ve got to go through Customs. Did you know you can skip the line? In summary, Mobile Passport Control (MPC) allows eligible travelers to submit passport and customs declaration information to U.S. Customs and Border Protection through an app.
This allows you and your family to skip the long line after a day of travel. Additionally, it reduces the need for physical paperwork—not to mention that MPC is completely free and doesn’t require pre-approval! In fact, one time I reentered the US, I filled out my paperwork on the MPC app while I was in the normal Customs line. As soon as I finished, I jumped out of the line and sped right through with all the documentation I needed. Here’s a complete guide of how to use Mobile Passport Control:
The MPC app is available from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store
When you open the app, you’ll immediately be guided to either sign in or create a profile. If you’re new to the app, create a profile by entering (1) your passport details and (2) basic personal information (e.g. full name, birth date). You can create multiple profiles for family members.
Before you arrive to the airport for your trip, open your app and (1) select your port of entry and (2) answer the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s declaration questions. Submit your completed form electronically.
The app will generate a QR code after submission. The QR code is valid for 4 hours.
Once you reach customs, all you have to present is your passport and the QR code on your device, then you’ll proceed through the designated MPC lane and off you go.
Importantly, the information you submit is encrypted and shared ONLY with U.S. Customs and Border Protection. MPC is available at many major U.S. interntional airports and some seaports, but check the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website for the full updated list of participating locations. Again, there’s no pre-approval; required, but this does NOT replace the need for visas, ESTA, or other travel authorizations. Additionally, MPC does NOT work for connecting flights requiring re-check-in of luggage.
